A few years ago, I had the pleasure of reading Chandler’s first EPPIE award winning book, MotherShip. I have never forgotten that book and always hoped there would be a sequel.

Well now there is! Mother and her crew are back in an exciting action/adventure/mystery sequel that encompasses worlds peopled with a variety of alien beings rivaling even “Star Wars” eclectic collection. Chandler has the unique talent of bringing his characters to life and making you believe that they are not only possible, but maybe–just maybe they are waiting for you right around the corner.

One of my husband’s favorite adages is, “Never try to come between a mother and her child.” As I read this book, I thought of that and couldn’t help laughing. I get all kinds of books to write about and it’s always hard to choose. For this issue I had decided to write about the book The Field: The Quest for the Secret Force of the Universe (HarperCollins). It is a book about the new view of energy and its relationship to healing and other matters. Then another book came along and I just had to write about it: When Life Changes Or You Wish It Would: How to Survive and Thrive in Uncertain Times (William Morrow). Its title is pretty descriptive of its contents. The idea came to me to write about what these two books, on very different subjects, had in common to teach us. Doing so has proven worthwhile, giving me a new perspective on an old theme.

Ruth Ramsey believes in teaching her Health & Family Life class honestly and openly, something she has done for 15 years. When the ‘new’ brand of sex education allows only the teaching of abstinence, and involves untruths, she finds it a hard pill to swallow, and more than once has to go to a ‘retraining’ session. She is a very reluctant and less than perfect abstinence teacher.
